“There is an unparalleled humanitarian emergency in Venezuela, one that has been recognized by multiple international organizations.” - Financial Times
Venezuela used to be the most prosperous country in Latin America, with a higher GDP than its colonizer, Spain. Its school system used to be so advanced that even children in remote regions were able to access an education that would give them a strong chance at entering a good university and joining the country’s upper middle classes.
Military dictatorship, corruption and government-led repression and violence have since devastated the nation and its economy. Coupled with gross mismanagement and hyperinflation, a seven-year economic crisis has destroyed the school system. The healthcare system is on the verge of outright collapse. People who express their opposition to these horrors face the wrath of the abominable government, which is run largely by uneducated thugs.

Education
Basic school supplies such as paper are scarce and the cafeterias are fortunate to have rice and beans, with no thought of fruit or vegetables, children even surviving on rice water or nothing. The schools have not be maintained in years with roofs leaking terribly and revolting issues with plumbing.
Parents keep their children in bed as opposed to sending them to school because they would rather them sleep than starve at school. Schools that once taught thousands now only teach dozens.
Teachers made the equivalent of of $7 (CAD) per month, which is enough to purchase 0.8 kg of cheese, and are known to spend part of the their salary on repairs to their derelict classrooms. This unacceptable wage has driven many from the profession and many more have emigrated, leaving the workforce utterly depleted.
An entire generation is being forgotten about and condemned to poverty.

HEALTHCARE
Venezuela’s medicine shortage is estimated at 85 percent and hospitals are often without electricity, meaning babies on ventilators invariably die and surgeries are botched as the courageous doctors conduct them with the flashlight on their phones. Disease prevention is grossly neglected and the government does not care. The government is known to actively destroy critical supplies to repress the people.
Doctors also make the national government wage, which is equally paid to cleaners and labourers, of $7 (CAD) thus they are emigrating in the thousands leaving the healthcare workforce devastated. If it were not for courageous leaders at the local level, the country would largely have no healthcare system remaining whatsoever.
The government considers human life to be worthless and murders tens of thousands through its monstrous actions.
